Human Givens in action - what resonates with you?

All Names have been changed.

DEPRESSION
Freda a married woman in her early thirties had been depressed for all her adult life. She had been told and believed that depression was a chemical condition and had been on anti-depressants for many years. She had spent time in a mental hospital and was now six months into counselling on the NHS which was making her feel even worse. At the first session, I explained why most depressions could be quickly relieved and Freda was liberated by the realisation that her depression was not an illness. By the second session, Freda was more actively engaged in her life and feeling better. Certain traumatic experiences from her childhood were then successfully addressed and removed. In fact Freda had a lot going for her - she was intelligent and had a loving and supportive husband. To her delight, she told me in her third and last session that she was pregnant.

DEPRESSION
Liam, now 50, had been chronically depressed for over thirty years. Over these years, Liam had been to counsellors and periodically took anti depressants. But the periodic decline into depression, particularly as spring approached persisted. We identified some possible patterns that went back to his teenage years and we worked to relieve these - by a combination of deep relaxation and rehearsal, insightful conversation and powerful metaphors. We also looked at his life now - which in many ways was blessed and good but needed some redirection. After 5 sessions Liam felt better than he had for many years. He also was confident he had the tools to handle any times when previously he would have sunk back down.

TRAUMA
Lena was a singer - talented but unable to perform over many years due to traumatic memories of stage fright and associated fears of auditions. This failure to express herself had left her lacking self confidence. The difference after just four sessions was remarkable. She felt that the stage fright trauma had been ‘biologically removed' by the use of the Rewind and her confidence in company had been transformed. After rehearsing new audition work and reminding her of her strengths (long hidden). Lena was ready to restart her life.

PHOBIAS
Naomi, a young woman, had been scared of needles since a child. She feels she learnt this from her mother and now when she needed to visit a hospital for regular tests; it was becoming a major problem. In just one session, I successfully removed the emotional arousal linked to needles. Naomi reported back a fortnight later - the next hospital visit had passed off without a hitch.

PTSDJustin, a forty year old businessman came to see me in a very agitated and confused state. He had had a disastrous fire in his flat three months previously and since then had felt progressively out of control. He was sleeping badly, anxious at work and increasingly unwilling to be with his friends and daughter. Justin was clearly suffering from PTSD and so I used the Rewind to relieve the traumatic memories. A week later, Justin phoned to cancel the second session as he was ‘supercharged'. I reflected that perhaps Justin did not realise how fortunate he had been to discover Human Givens. Without this treatment, Justin would have found his life getting more and more difficult - perhaps soon finding himself on anti-depressants, losing his job and finding relationships increasingly hard to sustain.

ANXIETY
Carl was in his early forties and sick of living with chronic anxiety, low self esteem and a lack of close intimate relations. He had spent over two years in psychodynamic counselling and in his first session he explained with rare eloquence how his childhood and parents had impacted adversely on his capacity to sustain relationships. Unfortunately these insights were not helping him get his life moving as he wished. I worked by using the full panoply of techniques available - CBT, trance work, relaxation and setting tasks. The object was to change emotional and thinking patterns so that Carl could use his considerable resources to get his essential needs met - for fun and pleasure and closer connection and comfort with other people. Over seven sessions, Carl found himself becoming more resilient, less anxious and feeling in increasing control of his life and emotions for the first time.

STOP SMOKING
Susan had been smoking since her teens and just could not stop. She wanted to find other ways of keeping calm and hated her dependence on a filthy habit. She also was trying for a baby. I worked on other ways for her to relax and explained the chemical and psychological causes of addiction. These could be broken by establishing new habits and by a focus on motivation (with trance work very helpful). A month later, Susan cancelled her second appointment. She had stopped smoking . . . . . . and was pregnant.

ADDICTIONS/BINGE DRINKING
Harold was in his late twenties and following some debilitating and life threatening experiences in late teens found himself leading a fairly directionless, backward looking life. He drank a lot and from time to time found himself drinking so much in pubs that he lost all sense of what he might have done. This caused him a lot of anxiety. I worked to change the way Harold saw and emotionally responded to his life - particularly helping him get a future focus. And from this new perspective, Harold could begin to make and implement plans for both his professional and personal lives. With a different focus and stress levels much lower, Harold also gained control of his drinking.

ANXIETIES/LIFE COACHING
Quentin was a businessman in his early 30s who was finding that family experiences as a child were still impacting on him now both in his current relationship and his ability to focus at work. I worked on ways for Quentin to be in control of his emotions - and in particular, to be able to stand back from them and recognize them. I also used the rewind to remove strong emotional triggers from his early years. Quentin in fact came to see me regularly over a number of months to help him move on and cope better with different aspects of his working and personal life. Two changes were a much improved relationship with his partner and that his younger brother was now working for him.

OCD
Sean, a teenage boy was suffering from obsessive checking behaviour that was a great worry to him and his mother. Sean was initially quiet, uncommunicative and having visited counsellors, had little expectation of success. After establishing good rapport, I explained why he was acting as he was and this in itself was enormously helpful. I worked to help Sean develop the tools to relieve the stress at home and at school. Sean found that his patterns of behaviour began to return to normal. He found he was in greater control of his life and able to make good use of his evident capacity for understanding both himself and others.

OBSESSIVE BEHAVIOURS
Michele was a happily married middle class Mum with a full social life and being an obsessive hair puller came to see me in some distress. Like all such behaviours, hair pulling is a response to stress which becomes a difficult to break habit. By a combination of learning relaxation techniques and work under hypnosis to change bad patterns and to replace with better ones, Michele found the habit had gone after two sessions.

DIAGNOSIS OF PERSONALITY DISORDER
Dawn was in her late 50s, had a history of low self esteem and had been diagnosed as having borderline personality disorder. Dawn saw me for eight sessions. Over this period, good rapport was built and relaxation methods were taught. Dawn began to see how she could change her life in certain ways that could fulfill her capacities for friendship and working with animals. However the transforming work involved deep trance work including periodic use of the rewind. In effect, her whole life from the first bad memory as a young girl was reformed so that her emotional experience of her life became more positive and empowering. She became progressively calmer and it was clear that for the first time was gaining the confidence to take control of her life.
